What is counselling?

Counselling is when a professional counsellor engages with a client in a private, supportive and confidential setting to enable the client to explore any issues they may be experiencing in their life. Counselling can help the client see things more clearly, to enable choices and / or changes to be made.

What happens during the sessions?

The sessions are your time to talk about whatever you need too. The content of the session is your choice. This may enable you to gain a greater understanding of your feelings and actions. It can also help you explore alternative ways of coping. It can be a great relief to be able to share your worries and fears with someone who will affirm your feelings and help you to reach solutions.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions will vary according to your needs. In the initial session we will agree a minimum contract. I normally take the opportunity to review our work together every 6 weeks to take account of any changing needs or circumstances. The choice is yours; whether to continue, take a break or decide on a finish date.

Is what we discuss confidential?

Yes. I work to the BACP confidentiality guidelines. Confidence would only be broken if:

  • You give me consent for the confidence to be broken

  • Where I am compelled by a court of law

  • Where the information ‘is of such gravity that confidentiality cannot be maintained’ e.g. in cases of fraud and crime, and where there is a case of ‘serious physical harm to self and others’ involved.

How long do sessions last?

A session lasts for 50 minutes and starts and ends at the allotted time.

What is your fee?

I charge from £60 for a 50-minute session. Fees are payable 24 hours prior to your appointed session via bank transfer.

What notice do you need if I need to cancel a session?

I need at least 24 hours’ notice. If this is not given the full fee will remain payable.
